Read Across America Day!

As many of the parents, nannies, and child care workers know … its National Read Across America day! In honor of that, I wanted to share a few of my favorite children’s books from when I was a kid!

“I think I have this thing where everybody has to think I’m the greatest. And if they aren’t completely knocked out and dazzled and slightly intimidated by me, I don’t feel good about myself.”
Roald Dahl . The Fantastic Mr. Fox –

(That quote … I mean, how does that NOT make you laugh?)

“You monkeys, you” he said, shaking a finger at them, “you give me back my caps.”But the monkeys only shook their fingers back at him and said, “Tsz, tsz, tsz.”

– Esphyr Slodbodkina . Caps for Sale –

(I honestly forgot about this book for a looooong time.  But what’s not to love about a traveling cap salesman who gets hoodwinked by a bunch of monkeys?)

Remember the big dog party in the tree? Admit it, as a kid, you totally wanted to go to one too!  This book is pure silliness and I love every second of it!

I used to love ALL of the Berenstain Bears books.  I honestly think what stuck out to me in this one as a child were the little cat toys that stuck out their tongues.  Ridiculous, right?

In reality though, this book is a great tool to teach about not being greedy & to appreciate what you already have.

“Real isn’t how you are made,’ said the Skin Horse. ‘It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.’

‘Does it hurt?’ asked the Rabbit.

‘Sometimes,’ said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. ‘When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.’

‘Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,’ he asked, ‘or bit by bit?’

‘It doesn’t happen all at once,’ said the Skin Horse. ‘You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”
Margery Williams . The Velveteen Rabbit –

Do you have any favorite books from your childhood? Or any new favorites now that you’re a parent?
